Training hard is only half the equation. What you eat before, during, and after your workouts plays a major role in performance, recovery, and long-term results. You do not need a complicated diet or expensive supplements — a few simple principles can make a real difference.
Before Your Workout
Your body needs energy to perform. For morning sessions, a light meal or snack thirty to sixty minutes beforehand can help. Options like a banana with nut butter, oatmeal, or a small smoothie provide carbohydrates for fuel without sitting heavily in your stomach. If you train later in the day, a balanced meal two to three hours before gives your body time to digest. Avoid large, fatty meals right before exercise — they slow digestion and can cause discomfort.
During Training
For sessions under sixty minutes, water is usually sufficient. For longer or very intense workouts, a sports drink or gel can help maintain blood sugar and delay fatigue. Most gym-goers do not need intra-workout nutrition — save it for endurance events or extended training blocks.
After Your Workout
This is when nutrition matters most for recovery. Aim to eat within one to two hours of finishing. A combination of protein and carbohydrates supports muscle repair and replenishes glycogen stores. A chicken salad, Greek yoghurt with fruit, or a protein shake with a piece of fruit are all solid choices. The exact amounts depend on your goals — those building muscle may prioritise protein, while those focused on endurance might emphasise carbs.
Hydration
Dehydration impairs performance and recovery. Drink water throughout the day, not just during your workout. A simple guideline: if your urine is pale yellow, you are likely well hydrated. Dark urine suggests you need more fluids. For sessions over an hour or in hot conditions, consider an electrolyte drink to replace sodium and other minerals lost in sweat.
Keep It Simple
Nutrition does not need to be perfect. Focus on whole foods, adequate protein, and enough calories to support your activity level. At Terrough, our Cafe & Nutrition Cartel offers post-workout options to help you refuel. For personalised guidance, ask about our nutrition coaching add-ons.
